Dan Flores (born August 14, 1948) is an American writer, historian, and former professor. He is best known for his works on the American West, including Coyote America: A Natural and Supernatural History and American Serengeti: The Last Big Animals of the Great Plains.

Flores was born in Louisiana and grew up in Texas. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Louisiana State University, followed by a master’s degree in creative writing from the University of Montana. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in history from the University of Colorado.

Flores began his career as a professor, teaching courses in history and English at the University of Montana and the University of Colorado. He later turned to writing full-time, and his work has appeared in numerous publications, including National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, and The New York Times.

In addition to his books on the American West, Flores has also written about subjects such as the history of wolves in America and the cultural significance of the Texas Longhorn. He has received multiple awards for his writing, including the Spur Award from the Western Writers of America.

Today, Flores continues to write and lecture on topics related to the American West.
