Bret Weinstein is an American biologist, evolutionary theorist, and former professor of biology at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He gained widespread public attention in 2017 after he and his wife Heather Heying were involved in a controversy over issues of race and free speech at the college.

Weinstein was born on February 21, 1969, in Los Angeles, California. He received his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Pennsylvania and later earned his Ph.D. in evolutionary biology from the University of Michigan.

As a biologist, Weinstein has conducted research on topics such as the evolution of cancer and the emergence of complex traits in living organisms. He has also written and spoken extensively on issues related to evolutionary theory, culture, and politics.

In 2017, Weinstein and his wife Heather Heying were at the center of a controversy at Evergreen State College, where Weinstein was a professor. The controversy began after Weinstein objected to a proposal that would have asked white students and faculty to leave campus for a day as part of an event called the “Day of Absence.” Weinstein argued that the proposal was a form of racial segregation and a violation of free speech.

The controversy sparked protests and counter-protests on campus, and Weinstein and Heying ultimately left the college after receiving threats to their safety. Since then, Weinstein has become a prominent public figure and commentator on issues related to free speech, political correctness, and social justice.

Weinstein has also co-hosted a podcast called “The DarkHorse Podcast” with his wife Heather Heying since 2020, where they discuss topics such as science, politics, and culture.
