Sebastian Junger is an American author, journalist, and filmmaker born on January 17, 1962, in Belmont, Massachusetts. He is best known for his non-fiction books, including “The Perfect Storm,” “War,” and “Tribe,” which explore themes related to human nature, society, and conflict.

Junger attended Wesleyan University, where he studied cultural anthropology. After graduating, he worked as a freelance journalist and wrote for magazines such as Outside, Men’s Journal, and Vanity Fair. In 1997, he published his first book, “The Perfect Storm,” which tells the story of a group of commercial fishermen caught in a massive storm off the coast of New England. The book was a bestseller and was later adapted into a Hollywood film starring George Clooney.

Junger’s subsequent books include “Fire” (2001), which examines the experiences of firefighters in the United States, and “War” (2010), which focuses on the experiences of soldiers in Afghanistan. In “Tribe” (2016), Junger explores the idea that modern society has lost its sense of community and connection, and that this has contributed to many social problems, including depression, addiction, and suicide.

In addition to his writing, Junger has directed several documentaries, including “Restrepo” (2010), which chronicles the experiences of American soldiers deployed in Afghanistan, and “Hell on Earth: The Fall of Syria and the Rise of ISIS” (2017), which examines the Syrian conflict and the rise of the Islamic State.
